Dreams Over Fears – the essence of pursuing & doing FIRSTS

I can’t remember where I read the words “Dreams over Fears” recently.  But when I did, I made note of it because it is the essence of pursuing & doing Firsts.  This was the motivation for setting out on my quest of “A Leap Year of Firsts.”  It is the reason I continue to pursue firsts moving forward.  The fear of the unknown often holds us back from trying new things (aka. Firsts), from taking those first steps towards our dreams. It’s the hesitation at the edge of a new experience, the doubt that whispers of failure before we’ve even begun. But what if we dared to dream bigger than that fear? What if our actions could resound more profoundly than our apprehensions, and our lives became the very sermons of perseverance and success we aspired to preach? This is the transformative power of doing things for the first time in our lives.

When you stand before the vast unknown of a first experience, let your dreams cast a larger shadow than your fears. This isn’t just about aspiration; it’s about vision. Imagine the person you will become, the skills you will acquire, and the joy of overcoming what once seemed an insurmountable hurdle. Dreams are the architects of our future happiness and endeavors. So, let them be grander, let them shape your courage, and most importantly, let them guide your steps.  It’s easy to speak of change, to talk of what we will do ‘one day.’ Yet, it’s in the doing that life’s orchestra finds its tune. The first time you do anything, make sure that the echoes of your actions resound louder than any prior declaration. Every action is a verse in the story you’re writing, a story best told through the indelible ink of doing rather than the fading whispers of intention.  Firsts are also actions over words.

In the quiet aftermath of beginnings, success does not always announce itself with a grand entrance. It is, instead, a crescendo built upon the many little things we choose to do, especially those that we embark on for the first time. When we lay the foundations with hope, belief, a sense of adventure and love—even in the aftermath of disappointment, failure, and hurt—success ultimately finds its voice. It becomes the noise that drowns out doubt, not through its volume but through its validity.  Consider this: every moment is an opportunity to take action that your future self will be thankful for. The reluctance to initiate often comes with the fallacy of ‘perfect timing.’ Remember, the perfect time is a myth; the right time is NOW! By starting today, you give yourself the chance to feel the pride of progress tomorrow.

Life’s path is strewn with situations that don’t pan out as we hoped. It is in these moments that we must offer ourselves grace. To understand that even though we might disappoint, we learn. To recognize that our failures are not a reflection of our entire capability, but rather a part of our evolving narrative. To accept that we can let others down and still hold value and be deserving of love.  Mistakes are the inevitable companions of first experiences. They should not be feared but embraced as the natural outcomes of the courageous act of trying. Give yourself the permission to be human—to not just journey but to learn along the way. It’s in this process of learning, of acquiring wisdom and resilience, that true growth is fostered.

As you embark on the new experiences’ life has to offer, keep these thoughts as your guiding stars. May your dreams outshine your fears, your actions resonate louder than your proclamations, and your life reflect the essence of your aspirations. And in the end, when you look back at the cacophony of attempts, may the harmony of success be your most resounding testimony. So, take that step, embrace the firsts, and grow—your future is an unwritten chapter that begins with the courage of NOW.  Will you?
