Travel Firsts: Scotland & Ireland

Isle of Skye, Scotland

I am taking my dying Father’s words to heart … “I’m doing it while I can.” I’m traveling and experiencing life while I still have my health and am able to get around to see the world. You don’t have to travel around the world to do this. I go out for a daily walk around my neighborhood every day to listen to the bird’s chirp in the morning, while I can.

The last week I have been fortunate to be able to experience the beauty of Scotland and Northern Ireland. I was able to experience it with some dear friends. I walked the fairways of Kingsbarns, The Old Course at St. Andrews, Royal Dornoch, Royal Port Rush and Royal Dublin Golf Clubs. As a golfer, playing golf in the Isles was a dream I never thought I’d realize. We visited a number of pubs to share a pint or two with the locals, while listening to some live Irish music. We took in the breathtaking beauty of the Isle of Skye, and Giant’s Causeway. We whet our whistle with Irish whiskey at the Bushmills Distillery, single malt Scotch in a highland’s distillery and beer at the Guiness Factory. We took in the Titanic Museum, the Edinburgh Royal Mile and lodged in a few castles along the way. All unforgettable firsts! I even wore a Kilt for the first time in my life and hiked the Isle of Skye in it. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined doing these firsts.

As I experience these firsts, I try to live in the moment to take them all in. I view my surroundings. I listen for unique sounds. I close my eyes to inhale the smells of my surroundings. I reach out to feel the texture of what is in front of me. I attempt to immerse myself in the encounter, adventure, occurrence or happening. I’m “doing it while I can.” I appreciate every day above ground. I’m grateful for the opportunity to live and experience life. Are you?
