Crossing the Drake Passage – A fearful FIRST

My journey this week to Antarctica began in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, nestled at the tip of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego archipelago – part of majestic Patagonia. Known as the “Gateway to Antarctica” or the “End of the World” Ushuaia serves as the jumping off point for expeditions to the frozen 7th continent. As we board our vessel and bid farewell to civilization, anticipation, with a sprinkle of fear, fills the air as we set sail into the vast expanse of the Southern Ocean via the Beagle Channel at sunset (pictured) to the Drake Passage.

The Drake Passage, a legendary fierce stretch of water between South America’s Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica, is renowned for its tempestuous seas and awe-inspiring landscapes. For us adventurers, seeking the ultimate expedition to the White Continent, traversing the Drake Passage is an unforgettable experience. In this blog post, we’ll embark on a virtual journey from Ushuaia, Argentina, through the tumultuous waters of the Drake Passage, to the pristine wilderness of Antarctica. The Drake Passage is infamous for its rough seas and unpredictable weather conditions, earning it the nickname “The Drake Shake.” We are praying for “The Drake Lake.”

Our prayers were answered – we got the Lake NOT the Shake! After two days of navigating the 12′ to 15′ swells of the Drake Passage, we finally catch our first glimpse of the Shetland Island coastline. Towering icebergs glisten in the sunlight, their crystalline forms sculpted by the forces of nature. As we disembark onto the frozen continent, we are overcome with a sense of awe and wonder at the sheer beauty of this pristine wilderness. There were penguins, penguins, elephant seals and more penguins. Thousands of them.

Traveling through the Drake Passage to Antarctica is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that promises to leave a lasting impression on all who embark on the journey. From the thrill of navigating rough seas to the awe-inspiring beauty of the Antarctic landscape, every aspect of the expedition is a testament to the indomitable spirit of exploration. So pack your bags, brave the Drake Shake, and prepare to embark on the voyage of a lifetime to the frozen realm of Antarctica. I don’t get to experience this special moment, this First, without conquering my fear of sea sickness, and my fear of the Drake Passage. What fear do you have that you can face to unlock a special moment in your life?
